What to Expect During Pallet Racking Installation in Richmond, VA
8 min read · May 2026 · RVA Racking Team
First-time rack buyers often have no frame of reference for what a pallet racking installation involves, how long it takes, or how much disruption to expect. This guide walks through the process from first call to final anchor — so you know what to plan for.
Phase 1: Site Assessment and Layout Design
Every racking project for a Richmond-area warehouse starts with a site assessment. RVA Racking will visit your facility to:
- Measure the building dimensions and clear height
- Document column locations and structural obstructions
- Review your pallet dimensions, weights, and forklift type
- Identify any floor conditions (cracks, slopes, embedded utilities) that affect anchor placement
- Discuss your storage goals and operational flow
Following the site visit, we produce a CAD layout drawing showing racking rows, aisle widths, pallet position counts, and beam heights. This layout becomes the basis for your quote and, if required, for permit applications.
Timeline: Site assessment is typically same-week. CAD layout and quote follow within 2–5 business days.
Phase 2: Permitting (If Required)
Most permanent pallet racking installations in Richmond, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County require a building permit. RVA Racking handles the permit process as part of our service — including preparing and submitting the permit application and PE-stamped engineering drawings if required.
The Richmond-area permit process typically involves:
- Submission of permit application with rack layout drawings
- Engineering review by a Virginia-licensed professional engineer (if required by the jurisdiction)
- Permit review period of 2–6 weeks depending on the jurisdiction and project complexity
- Permit issuance; permit must be posted at the jobsite during installation
- Building inspection after installation is complete
Timeline: Plan for 3–8 weeks from permit submission to issuance in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. Rush reviews are sometimes available. We can begin material procurement during the permit review period to minimize overall timeline.
Phase 3: Material Procurement
Once the layout is finalized and permit is in process, materials are ordered. Current lead times for pallet racking components from major manufacturers:
- New standard selective racking: 3–8 weeks depending on manufacturer and quantity
- New specialty systems (drive-in, push-back, flow): 6–14 weeks
- Used racking from local stock: 1–3 weeks (subject to availability)
For time-sensitive Richmond projects, we source from warehouse stock when available. For larger projects, we sometimes begin installation with available materials while the balance of the order ships — particularly for phased installations.
Phase 4: Site Preparation
Before installation day, your facility needs to be ready:
- Clear the installation area: Remove all product, pallets, and equipment from the area where rack will be installed. Our crew cannot work around stored product — the floor must be clear.
- Mark existing floor utilities: Water lines, electrical conduit, or other embedded floor utilities must be marked before anchor drilling. If you don't know what's in your slab, have a utility locator scan before installation.
- Ensure dock access: Rack components are delivered on flatbed or van trailers. Dock or grade-level access is required for delivery. Coordinate delivery timing with our team.
- Provide forklift for unloading: You'll need a forklift available to unload materials from the delivery truck — or advise our team in advance if you need us to bring one.
Phase 5: Installation Day(s)
Installation sequence for a typical selective pallet racking project:
- Layout marking: Our crew marks upright base plate locations on the floor using the approved CAD layout as a reference. This typically takes 1–2 hours for a 10,000 sq ft installation.
- Upright assembly: Uprights are assembled on the floor (bases, cross-braces, spine braces) then stood and positioned.
- Initial leveling and alignment: Uprights are leveled plumb in both directions using shims if needed. Row alignment is verified.
- Beam installation: Beams are installed level to level, starting from the lowest beam and working up. Safety clips/pins are installed on every beam connector.
- Anchor drilling and installation: Once the structure is aligned and level, anchor holes are drilled and anchors are set. Final torque on anchors is verified to specification.
- Accessories installation: Wire decking, column guards, and other accessories are installed.
- Final inspection and load placards: Completed installation is inspected for level, plumb, and anchor torque. Load capacity placards are posted at the end of each row.
Timeline for installation: A crew of 3–4 installers can typically complete 200–400 pallet positions per day, depending on rack height and configuration. A 1,000-pallet-position installation typically takes 3–5 days.
Phase 6: Inspection and Closeout
After installation, if a building permit was required in your Richmond jurisdiction:
- Schedule a building inspection with the local permit office (RVA Racking handles this)
- Inspector reviews the installation against the approved permit drawings
- Certificate of occupancy or final inspection approval issued
You receive final documentation from RVA Racking including as-built drawings (showing actual installation vs. design) and load capacity placards for your records. We also review the system with your team — pointing out load limits, proper loading procedures, and what to watch for during daily operations.
