Pallet Racking Brands & Manufacturers: What Richmond Warehouses Use

7 min read  ·  May 2026  ·  RVA Racking Team

Knowing what brand of racking you have — or what brand you're buying — matters more than most warehouse operators realize. Components from different manufacturers are not interchangeable, capacity ratings vary by manufacturer and product line, and parts availability differs significantly. Here's a practical overview of the major pallet racking brands common in Richmond, VA warehouses.

Important Note

Never mix components from different rack manufacturers without a licensed engineer certifying the combined system. Uprights and beams from different brands may appear compatible but have different load ratings and connector tolerances.

How to Identify Your Rack Brand

If you inherited an existing rack system in your Richmond warehouse and don't know the brand, look for:

  • Manufacturer stamps on the upright column face: Most manufacturers stamp their name or logo on the upright at regular intervals
  • Load placard: The load capacity placard often lists the manufacturer and product line
  • Connector design: Beam connector clip shape is unique to each manufacturer — a distinctive "fingerprint" once you know what to look for
  • Teardrop vs. slotted vs. keyhole uprights: The shape of the punched holes on the upright column identifies the product family

If you can't identify the brand and need to expand or repair the system, RVA Racking can identify the manufacturer from photos or a site visit and source compatible components.

Major Rack Brands in the Richmond Market

Interlake Mecalux

One of the most widely distributed rack brands in the Mid-Atlantic. Interlake (now part of Mecalux) has been a dominant presence in Richmond-area warehouses for decades. Characterized by a distinctive teardrop-shaped upright perforation. Very wide parts availability — this is the brand you're most likely to encounter in a used rack purchase and most likely to find compatible new components for.

Unarco (now part of Steel King)

Another major presence in Richmond warehouses, particularly in distribution center-class facilities. Steel King acquired Unarco and continues to manufacture compatible product. Known for heavy-duty product lines used in high-bay applications. Parts still available through Steel King distribution network.

Ridg-U-Rak

A Pennsylvania manufacturer with significant distribution in the Mid-Atlantic market, including Richmond. Ridg-U-Rak has been family-owned since 1948 and makes a full line of selective, drive-in, and specialty rack systems. Their product is commonly found in Richmond-area manufacturing and distribution operations. Direct manufacturer parts available.

Frazier Industrial

Long Island, NJ-based manufacturer with strong Mid-Atlantic distribution. Frazier is known for heavy-duty structural racking (welded frame rather than bolted). Popular in cold storage and heavy manufacturing applications in the Richmond area. Structural rack from Frazier requires welded repair — different from standard roll-formed rack repair.

Speedrack / Husky Rack

Economically-priced rack systems common in smaller Richmond warehouses and light manufacturing environments. Parts are available but the product line is generally lower load capacity than the major brands above. Often found in facilities that prioritize price over long-term durability.

Hannibal Industries

West Coast manufacturer that ships nationally. Less common in Richmond but present in some major distribution centers that operate nationally standardized systems. Parts can be sourced but lead times may be longer than for Mid-Atlantic manufacturers.

Buying New vs. Buying Compatible Used

When expanding an existing rack system, you have two options:

  • Match the existing manufacturer: Best option if the manufacturer's product is still available and in good supply. Ensures full compatibility and maintains your original load ratings.
  • Compatible third-party components: Some aftermarket manufacturers produce components that claim compatibility with major brands. Use these only with engineer certification — don't assume compatibility based on visual appearance.
  • Full replacement: If the existing system is old, mixed-brand, or undocumented, a full replacement with a current manufacturer's product may be more cost-effective than trying to expand a questionable legacy system.

What Matters More Than Brand Name

In practice, the major North American rack manufacturers all produce quality product that meets ANSI/RMI standards when properly specified and installed. Brand choice matters less than:

  • Correct specification for your load and height requirements
  • Proper installation with floor anchoring and level setup
  • Compatibility with your existing system if expanding
  • Parts availability for future repairs and expansion
  • Warranty terms and the installer's experience with the product
