Wire Decking for Pallet Racking: What Richmond Warehouses Need to Know
6 min read · May 2026 · RVA Racking Team
Wire decking is one of the most commonly added accessories to pallet racking systems in Richmond-area warehouses — and one of the most misunderstood. It's not just a convenience item. In many facilities, it's a fire code requirement. Here's what you need to know.
What Is Wire Decking?
Wire decking consists of a welded wire grid panel with channel supports (waterfall front and back) that drop into the beams of a pallet rack. It provides a solid surface for pallets that don't have full deck boards, prevents small items or broken pallet components from falling through beam levels, and — critically — allows sprinkler water to flow through the rack levels in a fire.
Why Richmond Warehouses Use Wire Decking
1. Fire Code Compliance
This is the most common driver. NFPA 13 (the fire sprinkler standard adopted in Richmond and throughout Virginia) governs how in-rack sprinklers interact with racking systems. Solid wood or metal decks block sprinkler water from reaching lower levels — creating fire protection gaps that can result in code violations and increased insurance costs.
Wire decking allows sprinkler water to pass through. If your facility has in-rack sprinklers or if your local fire inspector requires it, wire decking may be mandatory rather than optional.
2. Non-Standard Pallet Support
Not all pallets are full deck boards. Pallets with broken bottom boards, slave pallets, or non-standard pallets can shift or tip if only supported by two beams. Wire decking creates a continuous support surface that catches partial-deck pallets safely.
3. Carton and Case Storage
When storing cartons, bins, or smaller items directly on rack (without pallets), wire decking provides the support surface needed. It's essential for case-pick operations where individual cartons are stored at multiple levels.
4. Safety and Falling Objects
Wire decking significantly reduces the risk of items falling through to lower levels — a meaningful safety benefit in high-bay facilities where workers operate on lower levels while pallets are stored above.
Types of Wire Decking
Standard Waterfall Decking
The most common type. The front and back channels "waterfall" down over the beams, hooking over the beam face. Drops into place without any fasteners. Sized to fit your specific beam width and bay depth. This is the right choice for most Richmond warehouse applications.
Flared Channel Decking
Similar to waterfall decking but with a flared front channel that sits flush with the beam face rather than dropping over it. Used when a flush surface at the front of the rack is required (order picking applications). Less common than standard waterfall.
Step Decking
Designed for step beams (beams with a built-in recessed ledge). The decking sits within the beam profile, keeping the top surface level with the top of the beam. Used in some specialty rack configurations.
Wire Decking Load Ratings
Wire decking has its own load ratings independent of the beam capacity:
- Light duty: 1,500–2,000 lbs capacity — suitable for light carton storage
- Medium duty: 2,500–3,500 lbs — standard for most pallet applications
- Heavy duty: 4,000–6,000 lbs — for heavy pallets, steel coils, or dense product
Important: the wire deck rating must be equal to or greater than the beam capacity rating. Don't install 2,000 lb wire decking on beams rated for 4,400 lbs per pair — the decking becomes the weak point in the system.
Sizing Wire Decking for Your Rack
To size wire decking correctly, you need:
- Width: Beam length (inside column to inside column) — typically 96", 108", or 144"
- Depth: Upright frame depth — typically 36", 42", or 48"
- Wire gauge: Heavier gauge for higher capacity requirements
- Number of supports (wires running front to back): More supports = higher capacity and less deflection under load
If you're unsure of your beam or frame dimensions, RVA Racking can measure your existing system and supply correctly-sized wire decking. We supply and install wire decking for all major rack brands common in the Richmond market.
Wire Decking Cost in Richmond
Wire decking pricing in the Richmond market:
- Standard 96" x 42" medium duty deck: $28–$45 per panel, supply only
- Installed price per panel: $35–$60 depending on rack height and quantity
- Full bay (3 levels, 2 decks per level): $210–$360 installed
Bulk pricing applies for larger quantities. A full warehouse retrofit is significantly more cost-effective per panel than a small order.
